Since last May, seven pregnant women and a man in his 40s have been sickened. Four of the pregnant women died.
“Although these are only preliminary results, considering the approaching winter season when many people start using humidifiers at home, we have decided to make an announcement to make sure people stop using any kind of sterilizers for their humidifiers as they are highly likely to be the cause of the illness,” said Jun Byung-yool, director of the KCDC, at a press briefing yesterday.
The KCDC began animal testing in late September after suspicions arose in late August that sterilizers, which are added to the water tanks of humidifiers to kill micro-organisms, were the mysterious cause of the pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis.
According to the KCDC, 80 mice were divided into four groups, with three of the groups inhaling air from humidifiers that used sterilizers. One group was left as the control.
The KCDC said that they selected three brands with the largest market shares to conduct the test. The rest of the 13 brands will be tested in order.
After a month, necropsies on the mice found that two groups suffered from pulmonary fibrosis, or scarring of the lungs, the same effect that killed the four pregnant women this year, the KCDC said.
“If final results prove the cause-and-effect relationship between sterilizers and the illness, we’ll immediately recall the products.” The KCDC said final results are expected to be announced next week at the earliest.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare, meanwhile, said it would consider bringing sterilizers under the auspices of the Korea Food and Drug Administration before they enter the market.
Instead of sterilizers, the KCDC said cleaning humidifier water tanks was enough to ensure clean water. The KCDC advised people to thoroughly clean tanks once a day with clean hands.

가습기 살균제 쏘였더니 실험 쥐 폐 딱딱하게 굳어
복지부, 사용 중단 강력 권고… “관련 제품 강제 수거 발동”
현재 시중에 판매 중인 가습기 살균제의 사용 및 판매가 전면 중단될 것으로 보인다. 원인미상 폐(肺) 손상의 원인으로 가습기 살균제가 잠정적으로 지목된 데 따른 조치다.
보건복지부와 질병관리본부는 4일 원인미상 폐 손상의 원인을 규명하는 실험 쥐 대상 흡입독성실험 경과에 따라 가습기 살균제 사용 중단을 강력 권고했다.
전병율 질병관리본부장은 “실험 쥐의 폐 조직에서 원인미상 폐 손상 환자와 동일한 폐 섬유화 현상(폐가 딱딱해짐)이 나타났다”며 “최종적으로 인과 관계가 입증된 제품에 대해서는 제품안전기본법에 따라 강제 수거 명령을 발동할 예정”이라고 설명했다.
흡입독성실험은 지난 9월 말부터 3개월 계획으로 진행되고 있다. 흡입실험은 실험 쥐 80마리를 20마리씩 4개 집단(시장점유율이 높은 살균제 3종을 흡입한 3개 집단과 흡입하지 않은 1개 비교군)으로 나눠 하루 6시간씩 주 5일간 살균제를 흡입하게 했다. 흡입 1개월 후에 진행된 1차 부검 결과에서 2개 제품을 흡입한 실험 쥐에서 병리학적으로 원인미상 폐 손상 환자와 같은 폐가 딱딱해지는 변화가 나타났다. 그동안 시중에 유통됐던 가습기 살균제는 총 13종이지만 실험공간으로 사용되는 흡입시설이 4개뿐이어서 일단 4개 집단만을 대상으로 실험이 이뤄졌다.
질병관리본부는 폐 섬유화 정도나 세포 수준의 병변 형태 등 구체적인 병리학적 판독과 전문가 검토를 거쳐 다음주 중에 문제 성분을 포함한 최종 결과를 발표할 예정이다. 시중에 판매 중인 나머지 제품들에 대해서도 추가적으로 실험을 진행할 계획이다
